Obermeyer is a beloved American ski apparel brand loved and trusted by millions. It not only looks stylish on the slopes but has an incredible backstory.

Obermeyer’s founder hails from humble beginnings. Klaus Obermeyer grew up in a tiny rural Bavarian town named Oberstaufen, Germany. After moving to America in 1947, Klaus taught skiing lessons in Aspen. He discovered his passion for ski innovation there. Obermeyer founded his company in 1947 in Aspen, CO.

Klaus’ motto is “Make skiing safer and more fun!” He began experimenting by constructing a simple down ski parka from his mother’s comforter and tested it on the mountain. He innovated his prototype until he perfected a warm ski jacket.

Obermeyer also invented the crucial ski brake, keeping the ski in place while a skier steps out. The ski brake is indispensable to safety. Klaus also created a special sunblock to protect skiers against harmful UV rays, especially in alpine settings. All skiers and snowboarders are taught to apply sunscreen to reduce the risk of sunburn.

Klaus formulated the mirrored lens, which is featured in innumerable ski goggles and sunglasses today.

Obermeyer ski apparel is world-famous for its vivid colors, silhouettes, and one-piece ski suits. His wife Nome Obermeyer had the idea to combine colors with attractive silhouettes to bridge the gap between tactile clothing and fashion.

Klaus Obermeyer says “Skiing is like being given a pair of wings so you can fly down the mountain. His mission was to inspire skiers and increase safety on ski slopes. He has achieved much more than he originally set out for.

Obermeyer is 103 years old today, swims daily, comes into the office with a smile, and welcomes people to try out the wonderful sport of skiing. He has a large family who support his company. His spirit and innovative designs continue to flourish in the ski world and leave its mark on the industry. His motivation shows us that the heart of a company is invaluable to its success.

In Aspen, local cars show off bumper stickers saying “Ski like Klaus!” His enthusiasm and smile-inducing optimism are admirable.

Obermeyer is a family-owned corporation that puts quality and innovation above all. They stand out from other competitors.
